Skateboarding, skydiving and other extreme sports share a common trait: they’re all deeply rooted in community. Just mention “getting G’d up” at any drop zone, and you’ll quickly learn that the phrase is common among skydivers. The phrase was coined in reference to Mike Gruwell, the founder of ChutingStar, an online retailer specializing in skydiving and skateboarding equipment and apparel.

ChutingStar was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1999 and began selling skydiving gear in 2006. An expansion to skateboarding gear followed shortly thereafter. Since then, the brand has became well known within the skydiving and skateboarding communities. When ChutingStar wanted to create a community-driven, social experience on their Magento eCommerce site, the company turned to Blue Acorn.

The Magento Enterprise Edition site is loaded with custom features. To engage the tight-knit community, actual user photos of enthusiasts using ChutingStar products are featured across the site. The homepage gives shoppers the ability to purchase products seen in curated user photos with the hashtag #CStars through a custom social shopping module built by Blue Acorn.

Creating a skateboard from the deck up has never been easier. Blue Acorn designed and developed an interactive feature for users to customize a skateboard piece by piece. From a deck to the wheels to bearings, every item available on ChutingStar.com can be added to a skateboard, and users can shop the details of each piece before selecting. Once complete, the fully tricked out skateboard can be delivered or picked up assembled or unassembled. Before checkout, ChutingStar generates a link to share the final product on social media or send to potential gift givers.

The site leverages Magento’s native one-page checkout so users can easily complete their transactions, and also offers a pickup-in-store option for customers who live near one of ChutingStar’s warehouses. Blue Acorn integrated additional functionalities from its technology partners, including AddShoppers, AheadWorks, Dotmailer, Kount, SweetTooth and Rackspace. Today, ChutingStar’s community of users find it easier than ever to find the gear they need to chase their next adventure.
